5 Things to Do With An Old PC

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

1. Donate It
One of the best things to do with an old PC? Donate it to your local charity. There are many, many families out there who do not have the luxury of owning even a basic computer system. Do your part to help them get into the world of computers.

Two sites that I like to visit for this purpose are National Cristina Foundation and Earth 911. Both sites are non-profit organizations and have compiled a comprehensive body of information to promote computer recycling and reuse.

One important note about donating computers - make sure you clear out and delete any personal information on the drive. Simple deletion is not sufficient - you will need a powerful data erasing tool like Active@ KillDisk - Hard Drive Eraser.

2. Trade It In
There are many computer dealers (e.g. HP) which offer trade-in promotions on computers and peripherals. Before you buy a new PC, see if the retailer can offer you any trade-in discounts. As long as your old computer is in decent condition, it can fetch some money. ‘Decent condition’ usually refers to any Pentium-class notebook or desktop with a hard drive, monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

3. Auction It
Another option is to sell the computer on eBay or an equivalent auction site. eBay is one huge clearing house where people sell all sorts of old stuff - computers is but one such category of goods. You can also organize a quick garage sale and see if any of your friends or neighbors want the computer.

4. Set Up A Server
If you’ve been meaning to learn about computers and servers, you can use the old PC as a test system. At home, I use an old PC as a file server for storing and sharing data sometimes. Alternatively, you also tear apart the computer and see what its innards are like (which is what I used to do).

5. Salvage Some Parts
Not the whole of your old PC needs to be thrown away. You can usually salvage parts to be used in a new PC, especially if you intend to build one yourself. Things like the monitor, sound card, hard drive, LAN cards, CD and DVD drives and sometimes even computer memory can be re-used.

Conclusion
Well, I do hope this article has given you some insight into how you can create more value of of an old computer. So the next time you’re thinking of junking an old PC, think again - there may be hidden potential in it yet.

Will You be Watching the World Cup on Your Mobile Phone?

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

World Cup 2006 is almost upon us and the worldwide audience is set to smash all records. But the days of cramming around the television in the front room or in the local pub are diminished if not yet gone. With increased technological developments, football fans will be able to utilise new technology to follow their national teams’ fortunes.

The increasing sophistication of the web means that live games will be shown on sites such as the BBC this summer. Streaming video content to your desktop or laptop is nothing new but the marketers recognise the value of the big occasion and with all games being available for live video download the 2006 World Cup will be the biggest litmus test that this technology has had to date. The availability of live streams offers great flexibility to users who are at work, university, home working and so on to watch and enjoy the games — whether legitimately or not.

Similarly recent developments in mobile phones mean that we can now watch mobile content on mobile devices such as phones. Having the World Cup on your mobile phone means that you need not miss any of the action and can watch games on the move wherever you are. Just watch out for oncoming traffic. The sophistication of the latest mobile phones include internet connectivity and video content streaming allowing us to enjoy the footy on the bus or the train in a way that we have never been able to before.

Despite the popularity and frequent changes to our mobile phones, handsets with video streaming capability are still not in the majority. Sony Ericsson has led the way with video phones in recent years and Sony Ericsson models now have the capability as a standard handset feature. If you plan on watching the World Cup on the move the time is upon you to renew your phone so hurry up and call your network for an upgrade or visit one of the mobile phone stores to get your hands (and eyes) on the World Cup this year.

Mono Laser Printers

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

I sit in front of a screen all day and, though it doesnt bother my eyes overly, I dont feel the need to look at one too closely in the evenings. Occasionally I am sent documents to digest and for some reason my neural networks do not translate the written word into my consciousness with the same rapidity as papyrus based forms of communication.

If you excuse my previous verbosity and I get to more suitable communications I will just explain that I can’t easily digest information from a screen. I can browse it, I can take in the graphics and all that, but I can’t really get beyond the headlines, so to speak. If I need to actually take in the full import of a document I must have it in my hands, therefore it must be printed.

We have a beautiful Inkjet Printer here in the office, a Colour Photo Printer. This Canon Printer delivers beautiful documents, faithful representations of photos or even a whole presentation. However I tend to want to print out fifty page pdf’s. On the Canon this printing would take ages and cost a small fortune so really I ought to turn my attention to Mono Laser Printers, these are the speed merchants of the printing world, they are a no fuss click and print, they can manage a print rate of 20 pages a minute.

With mono laser printers you are looking at reduced print costs and a quick, quiet and efficient printing servie for office or home. The top brands are Brother, Canon, HP, Konica Minolta, Kyocera, Lexmark, Xerox, OKI, Samsung and TallyGenicom. If I take, for example, the Brother HL-2030, A4 Mono Laser Printer this solid and unsophisticated little number will quietly print out at 16 pages a minute, delivering a high quality ( 2400×600 dpi). This Mono Printer will print out thousands of sheets on a single drum and, hence, delivers both economy and quality.

So, if you are looking for a robust and simple solution to your office printing, and not looking at huge volumes ( as there are options for fully networked office printers which are more suitable for large, continuous print jobs ) do some research into Mono Laser Printers as they are a no nonsense solution to printing.

The Evolution of CCTV Surveillance

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Each camera had its own monitor. One camera, one monitor.

CCTV systems were introduced in the US and the UK during the 60s and 70s.

CCTV systems are over a thousand times more advanced than the basic camera and monitor configurations that first appeared in the 1960s. Systems from the 60s were basic, consisting of very low resolution black and white cameras connected by coaxial cable. Each camera was connected to a black and white monitor. A 16 camera configuration required 16 monitors. New applications of camera security systems include: underground trains and stations, sports stadiums, retail stores, shopping centers, public facilities, community parks, garages and parking lots.

CCTV Technology Evolution The basic technology evolved in the 60s. First of all, cctv switch boxes were added. A switchbox would allow the operator to switch between cameras. Operators now could see multiple camera views on one monitor. Only one camera could be viewed at a time. The 70’s brought Multiplexers, VCRs and solid state cameras. Multiplexers allowed the screen to be broken into multiple frames on the same monitor. VCRs allowed easy recording and video distribution. Solid state cameras helped improve reliability and the integration of VCRs.

‘First generation’ CCTV technology was initially impeded by some fairly major performance related problems.

In the 80s we learned that VCR recorders had many problems. VCR recorders were temperamental. The quality of the recordings was very poor. The combination of low resolution camera images, poor quality video tapes and low tech solutions meant that grainy and unclear images couldn’t be relied on even for conclusive identification purposes.

VCR technology couldn’t allow the operator to review and record events simultaneously and it was a very time consuming process to find and review specific events.

There was no motion detection capability and no way of viewing events from a remote location.

Expensive for what you get Even though early CCTV systems provided only relatively basic functionality and moderate performance, they were quite expensive - both in terms of the initial equipment cost and the installation. Since this is still a new growth industry, there is still a lack of qualified and skilled installers.

The Next Generation CCTV The ‘next generation’ of CCTV system arrived in the mid 90s. The new technology was a computer based Digital Video Recorder (DVR) DVRs allow images to be recorded at much higher resolution than previously. DVR eliminated a major problem with first generation CCTV systems — Video Tape! Worn out, forgot to change the tape, VCR recording tape.

DVRs are automatic and never require user intervention. When it is time to look at recorded images, the DVR continues to record. Images are time and date stamped and are very easy to review. DVRs using IP (Internet Protocol) technology allow authorized remote users to view, transmit two way audio, fully control the cameras and system itself over a local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN) or via the internet. With such flexible access, the modern generation of CCTV cameras may be operated remotely from a control center or, in fact anywhere with internet access. Equally, high quality digital images may be streamed anywhere and captured at a convenient and secure location. But it isn’t only the operating platform that has developed significantly; camera technology too allows far more functionality.

Today’s generation cameras can PTZ - pan, tilt and zoom, have higher resolution options, a large variety of lenses and are also capable of operating in ‘night vision. Audio is also now part of CCTV DVR technology. An operator is now able to synchronize motion based video events with audio analysis. Two way audio transmission allows the operator to question possible intruders, give instructions to staff and to record/search/replay in both audio and visual form. Next generation DDTV DVR systems are compatible with earlier camera technology, and are scaleable, flexible and can be integrated with a broad range of other management systems, such as access control and building management systems.

CCTV has certainly come a long way since the 1960s; it’s clear that the future of CCTV is secure and that technology will continue to develop to meet the changing needs of the surveillance market.

Best Thanksgiving Project Ideas Using Your Printer

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Thanksgiving is more than just a Native American tradition. It’s a time to show your appreciation to God for the many blessings you have received all throughout the year. Moreover, it’s a perfect time to gather all your loved ones for a simple and intimate dinner. It also starts the beginning of the holidays. It’s thus not surprising that everybody is in their festive moods come the third Thursday of November. You can also liven up your Thanksgiving spirit with a number of Thanksgiving-related project ideas using your color laser printer. Here are several fabulous ideas for you:

1. Place Cards

You can add your own creative touch in your table during Thanksgiving dinner. Rather than placing your usual table mats, why don’t you create your own version of place cards instead? If there aren’t too many guests invited, you can ask for their individual pictures, have them printed in your Epson or Canon printer, and use them as their personal place cards. You can even add your personal Thanksgiving message to each one of them. Definitely, all of your friends and family members will have the surprise of their lives seeing their faces at the dinner table.

2. Self-made Poetry

Do you have a knack in poetry, or are you inspired by the holidays to write your own poem? Thanksgiving is the perfect time to showcase your talent while letting your loved ones know the importance of the occasion. Besides, it’s almost the end of the year. It’s high time that you tell them how much you appreciate the good times you’ve spent the entire year through verses. You can write your poem in a word processor, add some designs that will fit into your chosen theme, and then print out the copies with your Canon or Epson printer later to all those who listened to you intently.

3. Mazes and Word Searches

Do you need to brush up your knowledge in Thanksgiving? Or would you like to have your friends and family members busy themselves while you’re still cooking your dinner? There are numerous Thanksgiving-related word searches and mazes that you can download from the Internet. If you have the gift of Gab, you can always come up with your own.

4. Native Americans Paper Dolls

What better way to teach your kids about the significance of Thanksgiving in American history than creating your own Native American paper dolls. Patterns are widely available in the Internet, and all you need to do is to print them in a color laser printer. You can even have the freedom to choose Native American costumes.

You just have to look for a sturdier paper when you’re going to print them so you can attach them to your future paper dolls. While you’re in the middle of the project, you can then add insights about the holiday. Surely, your children will have more reason to look forward the next Thanksgiving Day.

Sexiest Hairstyles For Long Hair

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

While looking for hairstyles for long hair, you’ll realize that there are many options that are available to you. With so many choices available, the key will be finding the one that best suits you.

With lots of hair to play with, you can experiment with a wide variety of looks. For instance, try putting your hair up in a fashionably untidy bun. Don’t scrape your hair back from you face, but instead leave a few tendrils loose and finger-comb the rest into a loose knot at the back of your neck. This is a wonderful look for a casual afternoon outing or a day around the house. Try a figure-8 bun for something edgy and a chignon for those nights when you want a touch of elegance. (See below for the best way to test different hairstyles for your face shape)

Sedu Hairstyles For Long Hair:

For a sleekly professional hairstyle, why not consider using the Sedu flat iron? Sedu products have a reputation for leaving hair sleek and shiny with a minimum of time and effort invested.

Through the use of moisture in every step of the styling process, the Sedu flat iron ensures that your hair does not end up flat and lifeless. This flat iron uses Sedu’s trademark ceramic plates to smooth out hair without leaving it looking dull. You can also use the Sedu flat iron to flip your hair and put waves into it; combine this treatment with hair that has been cut into layers for an especially dynamic look.

When speaking with your stylist about hairstyles for long hair, run the idea of layers past her. Layers can add a lot of personality to your look, and as well as being easy to care for, they can enhance and flatter the shape of your face. When you tie your hair back, layers fall down to frame your face and soften its angles. Layers can also lengthen a face that’s round and add accents to the existing planes and angles.

If you’d rather not to commit to layers, consider getting bangs cut into your hair. Avoid thin bangs that fall straight down, as this can give your face a rather boxy look, but heavy, side-parted bangs are ideal for a look that’s both fun and professional. Thick bangs that are combined with soft layers create a lovely look, and are easy to grow out if you decide to try another style.

There are many options for women looking for new hairstyles for long hair so find the one that’s right for you today!

Computer Building - The Pitfalls of Setting Up Your BIOS

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

I would like to offer some advice about putting your computer to sleep. I don’t mean wrapping it up in a warm blanket and reading it some Harry Potter. Normally called hibernation or standby, it is a feature that allows your computer to enter a power saving state without having to turn it off.

I built my desktop PC myself and as a result it has taken me 2.5 years to work out how to enable this feature. Up until now I had just assumed that it didn’t have the feature. This is very much what building a PC is like - you’re unlikely to get it right first time. I am always learning new settings in the BIOS which add functionality to my PC.

First time computer builders should be warned that setting up your BIOS is not a walk in the park. I found it was the single most complicated part of the build. The trouble is that the instruction manuals are not written in clear English. The way that I have deciphered the weird dialect is to make use of forums.

In fact this is one of the best ways to learn about building your PC you will find anywhere. Just type into Google the model of your motherboard together with what you what to know. For example, to learn about the hibernation feature, I typed in “MSI Fisr Hibernation”. More often than not you get a newbie asking questions which have been answered by more experienced techies.

When I initially built my system I was under the false impression that it was simply a process of plugging the components together. Without touching the BIOS at all my system was up and running and seemed to be working fine. However, I noticed that the CPU listed was not the one that I thought I had. The only explanation that could think of was that it was a counterfeit component, and I told the retailer that I wanted a refund. It would have saved me the embarrassment that ensued if the user guide had simply mentioned that I had to set the clock speed and multiplier. I guess those guides are not really written with the novice in mind.

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

To find what color laser printer is “best” for you, you must first determine your printing requirements which would then define the printer qualities capabilities that would suit the particular conditions and demands that need to be met. Here are some color laser printers that are priced below $1000 US. We are not saying they are the “best” but they could help give you a glimpse of what constitutes the best color printers that may meet your requirements and what constitutes a laser color printer that you must avoid.

Ricoh Aficio SP C210 - Priced from $350.00 to $1,068.00. Ricoh proudly advertises this printer as a “high-speed black & white printer with convenient color at an affordable price.” While this printer is quite big in size and physically heavy for its price, it is still a reasonable choice for home or small office as this color laser printer provides quality print-outs at a reasonable printing speed. It also sports a large paper handling capacity. Aficio SP C210’s downside is that its driver doesn’t have automatic feature that chooses the best color mode.

Lexmark X502n - Priced at $699.00 direct buy. Lexmark, a leading manufacturer of inkjet and laser printers proudly offer this versatile all-in-one (AiO) color laser printer. It carries the term “AiO” with its true meaning as it does a lot of things satisfactorily. Not only is it an efficient color laser printer, it also scans, functions as a stand alone fax machine, sends e-mail, and it is also an excellent copier. Whatever others would say, at $699.00, this is worth it. This could easily be any PC reviewer’s Editor’s choice.

Samsung CLP0-300N - Priced at $300.00. The Samsung CLP-300N’s immediate selling point at first glance is its design: it is impressively small and light, one can easily move it around for convenience.

This color laser printer doesn’t take much room with its minimal footprint, that it affords you more room for coffee and a box of pizza on your desk. One strong point of Samsung CLP0-300N is its network connector that enables you to share this printer in your office or home network.

Bankruptcy Student Loans - How To Use It To Pay Off Your Debt?

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Most student loans that are given by governments and which cannot be easily paid back may not always be rid off even through filing bankruptcy student loans, and the only option open to such a defaulting student is proving considerable financial hardship which in it is often quite hard to prove.

However, if you still want to file bankruptcy student loans, you need to prove that you are unable to pay off your student loan either according to repayment schedule, or in the coming years, and under such circumstances you need to make what is called good faith effort, which means not trying to lie to creditors, and that in spite of your best efforts, you still do not have enough funds to pay off your student loan.

Getting your bankruptcy student loans to be written off through such means basically depends on how the bankruptcy judge views your case, and if you are in luck, then you may get a judgment that will pave the way for these discharges either entirely or in part, though you still need to wait till the judgment before you try and get a new loan.

For those with a large student loan bankruptcy can help eliminate other unsecured loans freeing money to help off the student loans. Additionally, since the government eliminated discharging these loans through bankruptcy, other safeguards have been put into place, such as the amount of a person’s net income that can be taken through garnishment for a student loan. Depending on the circumstances, there may be some relief available for those with excessive student loan balances.

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy Is An Option

To get relief from aggressive collection actions on a student loan bankruptcy through what is called Chapter 13 may be an option. Provided the person filing for protection meets the criteria, it is possible to have a court trustee oversee loan repayments, offering bringing the person’s monthly payment schedule more in line with their income. Over the life of a chapter 13 bankruptcy, if the person’s income increases, the debtor’s can petition the court for larger payments to be made.

Provisions in the bankruptcy law, can allow for the discharge of loans if it can be proven that repaying the loans will create an undue hardship on the student or their family. It is also possible that in a court proceeding regarding student loan bankruptcy judges can eliminate part of the debt, requiring repayment of a portion of the loan.

While for the majority of former students with a student loan bankruptcy is not going to clear their debt, however with the release of some other obligations it may make meeting their monthly student loan payments more realistic. Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows the court trustee to set an amount the debtor must pay each month through the court to meet their debt through usually a five-year debt elimination plan.

The best option open to you when you are planning on filing bankruptcy student loans is to consult either the lender or the administrator in your school that handles student loans as well as websites of concerned authorities to find a workable solution for your financial woes.

Mobile Phones - No More a Comfort, But a Necessity

Monday, May 12th, 2008

The long range, portable electronic device used for telecommunication that uses a network of specialized base stations known as cell sites are popularly known as mobile phone. Also known as hand phone, this gadget supports many other services and accessories such as SMS for text messaging, email, and MMS for sending photos and videos. Most of these mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations which are interconnected to the public switched telephone network. The history of the phones that require no cable begins from 1945. It was in that year, the zero generation of handsets got introduced. Motorola Dyna TAC was the first approved mobile phone that got released in 1983. The cellular systems needed various leaps of technology including handover that permits a conversation to continue from cell to cell. In the present day, these phones have become a popular device.

NTT launched the first commercial cellular network in 1979 in Japan. It was in the middle of eighties that fully automatic cellular networks got introduced. Radiolinja launched the first modern network technology on digital 2G in Finland in 1991. This was the beginning of the competition among the mobile companies. Nokia mobile phones, Samsung mobile phones, and LG mobile phones are some other leading names in the mobile phone market. The handsets in those periods were of big size and could not be easily carried in the pockets. It was by the middle of nineties that they became portable. The market of this particular type of phones showed a sudden increase in the developed countries. In many European countries, the total number of mobile phones is more than the number of the people. As per a study by Eurostat, Luxembourg has the highest mobile penetration rate at 158 mobile subscribers per 100 people followed by Lithuania and Italy. The mobile penetration rate in Hong Kong is 139.8% of the total population while in the U.S, it is 81%. The growth rate of African cellular markets is twice faster than Asian markets. It is the availability of pay-as-you go services that helped in the growth of the African market. India is one of the largest growing markets for mobile networks. It adds up about 6 million phones every month taking the total number of subscribers to 256.55 million.

The main problem faced by the handset users is the rise in the number of models in the market. Each model comes out carrying features and services that are technically advanced. Sony Ericsson has recently released a few models that are really stunning. It becomes necessary for the user to consider various factors while using a mobile phone. In most of the cases, it is seen that users use up every last drop of their energy before they recharge; which should be avoided. It will be foolish to recharge the phone, while it is not holding the charge for a long time. In such a case the purchase of a new battery will be more beneficial.

The life of the Mobile Phones could be extended by lowering the brightness of the screen back light. The receiving of the signal is a big reason for the drainage of the cell battery. It will be therefore better to limit playing games, listening to music, taking picture or surfing internet on the handset as all these will drain the battery faster. Make it sure that the downloading of web features, games, ring tones, wall paper and screen savers do not recur fees as it may eat a big share of the monthly bill.

The mobile subscribers while purchasing a cell phone with one or two year contract or pay-per use agreement must have a complete idea of the usage of phone. This will help in cutting short the phone bills. Never forget to ensure that the roaming charges are a part of the deal as otherwise the bills will shoot up while traveling. Be careful of the hidden costs before signing the agreement. The user should also make sure that the parts and accessories could be easily obtained from any regular phone store. Even the purchase of the mobile phone from any internet based company should not create problems in availing the spare parts.

Adam Jaylin is associated with rupiz compare where you can compare cheap contract phones deals and sim free mobile phones price.
